Short answer: On published list prices, an AI receptionist costs far less than a live answering service at every volume we modeled (1 to 300 three-minute calls a month). Human services in our data work out to about $2.10 to $5.00 per included minute. AI receptionist minute plans run about $0.15 to $0.50 per included minute (Sameday AI, a home-services CSR, is $0.79 to $0.90). What you pay extra for with humans is judgment: upset callers, complicated intake, payment collection. Hybrids such as Smith.ai (AI with live-agent backup) and Abby Connect (human + AI) sit in between.

What the human services charge per minute
Plain arithmetic from tools.json (checked 2026-10-21): plan price ÷ included minutes. - Ruby (live human receptionists): 50 minutes $250 / 50 min = $5/min · 100 minutes $395 / 100 min = $3.95/min · 200 minutes $720 / 200 min = $3.60/min · 500 minutes $1,725 / 500 min = $3.45/min. No overage rate published. Ruby's pricing page (checked 2026-10-21) says optional AI enhancements are included on all plans. - Posh (live human receptionists): Chic $65 + $2.30/min · Vogue $130 / 50 min = $2.60/min · Elegant $215 / 100 min = $2.15/min · Luxurious $420 / 200 min = $2.10/min. Overage $2.30 down to $2.10 per minute. - Abby Connect (human + AI): Starter $164 / 50 min = $3.28/min · Essential $329 / 100 min = $3.29/min · Professional $599 / 200 min = $3/min. Abby's page says minutes double if you choose AI. No overage rate captured. - Answering Legal (live + AI, legal only): quote-only. Prices appear only after a lead form (tools.json, checked 2026-10-21).
For comparison, AI minute plans: Rosie $149 / 1,000 min = $0.15/min (lowest in our data); Marlie $49 / 250 = $0.20; Phonely $50 / 200 = $0.25; Dialzara $29 / 60 = $0.48; My AI Front Desk $99 / 200 = $0.50 (highest outside Sameday). Per-call AI plans: Upfirst $24.95 / 30 calls ≈ $0.83/call; Smith.ai Pro $150 / 75 calls = $2.00/call.

Cost assumptions (all estimates in this page): monthly list prices from data/tools.json (each tool's own check date, 2026-10-19 or 2026-10-21; see each tool page); every call lasts 3 minutes; per-call plans bill each call; Nextiva bills 1 "interaction" per call; Goodcall bills 1 "unique customer" per call (worst case: every caller is new); Newo bills 1 unit per voice session up to 3 minutes (its 50 free units are one-time, so not counted); Quo includes its cheapest phone plan ($28, 1 user) and echowin its $10/mo number; Beside Unlimited is $99 at any volume; Jobber is not estimated because it needs a Jobber plan; a plan with no published overage is only used up to its allowance, otherwise we price the next plan up; a plan with no published allowance is not estimated; "—" means not computable from published pricing (no prices, no published allowance, or volume above the top published allowance). Taxes, setup fees and add-ons excluded. Every figure comes from the site's own estimator, the same one behind the cost calculator.
Reading the table: - Ruby can be estimated up to 166 three-minute calls (its 500-minute plan). Above that, "—" means Ruby publishes no overage rate or bigger plan, not that it can't handle the volume. - Abby Connect can be estimated up to 66 three-minute calls (its 200-minute plan). - Smith.ai costs less than Ruby, Posh and Abby at every volume where all can be estimated, and it adds live-agent backup. But past about 41 calls it costs more than the cheapest pure-AI plans (see Rosie vs Smith.ai). - At every volume from 1 to 300 calls, the cheapest AI estimate is lower than the cheapest human estimate. We checked this by script.
When a human answering service is worth the premium
- High-stakes intake: personal-injury leads, medical triage, or anything where a missed detail costs more than the service.
- Emotional callers: complaints, emergencies, bereavement.
- Tasks beyond answering: Ruby's pricing page lists payment collection, outbound call assistance and client intake. Posh and Abby list similar extras on their sites. These are vendor descriptions we haven't verified.
- Low volume: if you only miss 10 calls a month, the dollar gap is small. At 10 calls, Posh is about $130 (Vogue). The cheapest AI estimates are listed in the table.
When AI is enough
- Booking, FAQs, hours, directions and message-taking: the bulk of small-business calls.
- After-hours overflow, where any answer beats voicemail.
- Spikes: AI tools answer simultaneous calls (Rosie, Nextiva and others say so on their sites), while human services bill every minute.
Hybrid options
- Smith.ai AI Receptionist: AI first, with transfer to a live North America-based receptionist "any time, day or night" (pricing page, checked 2026-10-21).
- Abby Connect: listed as Human + AI. Minutes double when you choose AI (tools.json note).
- Ruby: human-first, with "optional AI enhancements" on all plans (pricing page, checked 2026-10-21).
